The Smoker's Year Book 1908
The Smoker's Year Book 1908, written by Oliver Herford, illustrated by Sewell Collins
Today we are presenting an interesting book from 1908. It was written, printed, and sold in times when tobacco was not officially considered a health hazard although many doctors already warned about health issues experienced by smokers.
Anyway, tobacco was in some environments perceived from a pretty romantic point of view (and still is) and the rising industry supported all kinds of propaganda material. The Smoker's Year Book 1908 could be, as the title already suggests, one of such materials, often created in series, by imminent artists and on quality paper. But there was no law by which a supposed sponsorship should be announced to the public, so we'll never know.
Maybe it
was just a project of enthusiasts.
The Smoker's Year Book 1908 is essentially made of twelve whimsical poems written by versatile artist Oliver Herford and illustrated by two pictures by even more versatile Sewell Collins. The beginning already sets a tune. It says:
"The verses were written on paper by Oliver Herford & The pictures drawn on stone by Sewell Collins."
Themes of poems are, of course, related to the months of the year but we'll focus on graphic material only. As you'll notice, there are references to nature cycles, holidays, mythology, passing times, and (surprise, surprise) all kinds of smoking products connected to the 'St. Nicotine'.

Smoker's Year Book 1908 was published in October 1908 by Moffat, Yard & Company New York.

The poems and pictures are quite interesting and original. Both can be used for many different projects and this is just one of the numerous possibilities:
